Round-up: SKK Polonia, Neptūnas and RSU off to a winning start

The eighth European Women`s Basketball league`s season will start on Friday, October 28. Let`s find out how the teams have fared in the local tournaments.

Energa Basket Liga Kobiet – premier flight in Poland – this season features 11 teams.

The reigning champion Polkowice launched a EuroLeague Women campaign on Wednesday and posted a famous 73-46 win over Fenerbahce Istanbul.

Four other Polish clubs – Arka Gdynia, Polski Cukier AZS UMCS Lublin, Polska strefa inwestycji Enea Gorzow and KS Basket 25 SP.Z.O.O. Bydgoszcz – compete in the EuroCup Women.

SKK Polonia Warszawa opened the campaign with a 2-1 record, including a 73-68 road win at Enea AZS Politechnika Poznan.

Capital team edged out 1KS Sleza Wroclaw 76-75 at home opener on October 19 but dropped the next road game 70-75 at the historic city of Lublin.

The next game is scheduled on November 5 at Gdynia followed by a postponed game against MB Zaglebie Sosnowiec four days later.

Czech top flight ŽBL got a new title sponsor – Chance.

There are 10 teams, including the EuroLeague Women powerhouse ZVVZ USK Praha and two EuroCup Women squads – the 2022 EWBL champion Žabiny Brno and city rival KP Brno.

The action started in late September.

Levhartice Chomutov is in the fifth position with a 3-3 record, just behind three Euro-squads and a fellow EWBL team SBŠ Ostrava.

The Lionesses suffered three early losses against Brno duo and Ostrava (62-65) but are 3-0 since then.

Chomutov posted a 88-69 home win over Slovanka Bratislava and then went on a successful road trip with victories at Sokol Hradec Kralove 71-64 and Strakonice 85-70.

Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and Neptūnas Klaipeda compete in the Women`s Baltic Basketball league.

WBBL is a joint tournament – with five teams from Lithuania, five teams from Latvia and two from Estonia.

The distances are not too small either – there is a 600 kilometres driving distance from Vilnius to Tallinn and more than 400 kilometres between the Latvian towns of Liepāja and Daugavpils.

RSU took off to a winning start with a road victories at Aistes LSMU Kaunas 68-65 and LCC International University 88-47.

Matīss Rožlapa team registered 19 steals at Klaipeda.

Meanwhile, Neptūnas has a 4-0 record, including a 81-52 home success against TTT Rīga.

Martynas Airošius team also prevailed over Audentes Tallinn 136-51, setting the WBBL scoring record.

Neptūnas defeated Daugavpils University 86-59 three days before the EWBL debut.
