Καλώς ορίσατε! Eleftheria Moschatou will join EWBL


Eleftheria Moschatou is the first team from Greece, which will play in the European Women`s basketball league.


Moschatou and Tavros are two neighbourhoods in western Athens, located between a world famous Acropolis and a well known port of Piraeus.

Seven out of twelve A1 teams are located in a Greater Athens area – Eleftheria Moschatou, Olympiacos SFP, Panathinaikos, Proteas Voula, Dafni Agiou Dimitriou, Eunikos Ano Liosia and Esperides Kallitheas.


The women`s basketball team was founded in the early 1980-s.


Eleftheria Moschatou initially played in the regional league and later entered the A2 South league, where it played for seven years (2004-2009 and 2016-2018).


The team won two South Attica championships in 2004 and 2016 as well as three South Attica cups (2004, 2014, 2016).

A2 basketball league has experienced a wide growth.


In 2018, there were 24 teams, split in the North and South groups.

In 2022, there were 39 teams, split in four groups.

Eleftheria Moschatou entered the A1 league in the autumn of 2018.

The Athens team earned a 10-13 record in its first season to finish in the sixth place.


A year later Eleftheria Moschatou posted a 14-6 record to reach the third place just behind Olympiacos SFP (20-0) and Panathinaikos (16-4).


The 2020-2021 season was interrupted several times due to restrictions – two teams played only nine games (Eleftheria Moschatou had 11 games).

Six best teams advanced to the next round, while Eleftheria Moschatou finished in the eighth place.


Last year, nine teams were registered in the A1 league to play a two round tournament with 16 games each.


Eleftherias Moschatou finished the regular season in the fourth place behind Olympiacos SFP (16-0), Panathinaikos (14-2) and Esperides (11-5).

Four teams (!) had a 6-10 record – Eleftheria Moschatou, Dafni Agioy, Chania and PAOK.


The quarterfinals and semifinals consisted of the single elimination games, while the finals were played in the best-of-seven format.


Olympiacos SFP started the finals against Panathinaikos with a 2-0 advantage as the results from the regular season were counted in.

Eleftheria Moschatou lost against Chania 59-64.

This year Eleftheria Moschatou has started its fifth consecutive season in the A1 league – now with 12 teams.


Olympiacos SFP qualified for the EuroLeague Women after a three year break.


The Reds won the qualifying games against the Romanian champion ACS Sepsi SIC from Sfantu Gheorghe and a Serbian champion Crvena Zvezda Belgrade.


Panathinaikos authomatically qualified for the EuroCup Women regular season.

Four more Greek teams – Esperides Kallitheas, Chania, Eleftheria Moschatou and Dafni Agiou Dimitriou – registered for the EuroCup Women qualifiers.


Eleftheria Moschatou faced the Slovak team Slavia Banska Bystrica in the home and away series.

The Greek team won the first game at Banska Bystrica 72-71 but dropped the home game 58-61 and lost the series 160-162.

Eleftheria Moschatou regrouped and won the A1 home game against PAOK on Sunday, October 16.


Japan national team forward Monica Okoye joined the team and scored 14 points for the winners.

Okoye won the silver medal at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

She debuted in the 2018 FIBA World Cup at the age of 19.


The young Greek guards Lilia Karakasidou and Evangelia Natskou form a reliable backcourt together with American guard KeKe Calloway.


Calloway was a star player at the NCAA Division One team Mercer Bears (2015-2019).


She made the Southern Conference first team in 2018 and 2019.


Brittany Brewer is the main force under the basket.

A Texas Tech standout (2016-2020) was selected #17 by the Atlanta Dream in the second round of the 2020 WNBA draft.


Marios Despotakis is the head coach.
